Support the Restoration of Our Illions Carousel Horse!

Horses have played a role in Coney Island’s story for over a century, from the horse-drawn carriages that carried visitors along the Shell Road to the race courses that drew crowds to Brighton and Manhattan Beaches; from pony rides on the shore to George C. Tilyou’s thrilling Steeplechase ride. But it was on the merry-go-rounds of old, with band organs blaring and brass rings for grabbing, that the colorful and bejeweled steeds became an integral part of the history and culture of the People’s Playground, to the delight of generations of riders.

In 2024, the Carousel Museum of Bristol, Connecticut gifted a carousel horse to the Coney Island Museum. The horse originated from the workshop of M.C. Illions, widely regarded as “the Michelangelo of carousel carvers”. llions spent his early career working with many other carousel crafters of renown, including Looff, Carmel, Stein & Goldstein and, perhaps most famously, W.F. Mangels. In 1908, he established his own workshop in Coney Island, where he produced many legendary carousels. His creativity and skill can still be seen (though not ridden) on Coney Island’s B & B Carousell, which features Illions’ stunning Lincoln Centennial Horse.

Although our horse is badly in need of restoration, there’s no denying the beauty and artistry of the figure. You can view and learn more about the horse here

Coney Island was once the carousel capitol of the world, home to many of the most celebrated merry-go-rounds, artisans, and manufacturers in the industry. Today, only two carousels still operate in the People’s Playground. The CIM values this Illions horse as both a significant artifact from Coney Island’s past, and an important work of art, and is committed to its restoration. While the scope of work needed to transform the horse is extensive, we’re counting on the positive energy generated by the Year of the Horse -- and the support of folks like you -- to help us make 2026 the CIM’s Year of the Carousel Horse.
